Getting around Toronto does not have to be stressful. Whether you are visiting a doctor downtown, meeting family for lunch in Markham, or exploring a new park in North York, Google Maps makes navigation simple and stress-free. This free app guides you step by step, tells you exactly when to turn, and even warns you about traffic delays.
At North York Tech Help, we have introduced many seniors to Google Maps. Once you learn the basics, you will wonder how you ever managed without it. This guide walks you through everything you need to know to start using Google Maps confidently.
Google Maps provides clear, voice-guided directions anywhere in Toronto
Why Google Maps is Great for Seniors
Google Maps offers several features that make it especially helpful for older adults.
Voice-guided directions: The app speaks turn-by-turn instructions, so you do not have to look at your phone screen while walking or driving. Just listen and follow the spoken directions.
Real-time traffic updates: Google Maps monitors traffic conditions and can reroute you around accidents or heavy congestion. This saves time and reduces frustration.
Public transit information: In Toronto, where many seniors use the TTC, Google Maps shows bus and subway routes, schedules, and arrival times. You can plan your entire trip using public transit.
Street View: This feature lets you see photos of your destination before you arrive. You can preview what the building looks like and verify you are in the right place.
Getting Started with Google Maps
Follow these steps to start using Google Maps on your smartphone.
Download and Open the App
If you do not already have Google Maps, download it from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android). The app is free. Once installed, tap the icon to open it.
Allow Location Access
When you first open Google Maps, it will ask for permission to use your location. Tap "Allow" so the app can show where you are and give you accurate directions.
Search for Your Destination
Tap the search bar at the top of the screen and type your destination. You can enter:
- An address, like "25 Queen Street East, Toronto"
- A business name, like "North York General Hospital"
- A category, like "pharmacy near me"
Type your destination in the search bar to get started
Getting Directions
Once you have searched for a destination, follow these steps to get directions.
- Tap the Directions button. It looks like an arrow pointing right.
- Choose how you want to travel: walking, driving, or public transit. Icons at the top of the screen represent each option.
- Review the routes shown. Google Maps typically offers two or three options. Each shows estimated travel time.
- Tap Start to begin navigation. The app will guide you with spoken instructions.
- As you travel, the map updates in real time. Follow the blue line showing your route.
Using Transit Directions
For seniors who use the TTC, Google Maps transit directions are invaluable. When you select the transit option, the app shows you which buses or subway trains to take, where to transfer, and how long each segment will take.
You can also see the next arrival times for nearby transit stops. This is helpful when you are at a bus stop and want to know when the next vehicle is coming.
Saving Favorite Places
Google Maps lets you save locations you visit often, so you do not have to search for them every time.
- Search for a location, like your home or your doctor's office.
- Tap the location's name or icon to open its information card.
- Tap Save and choose a list: "Favorites," "Want to go," or "Starred places."
- Your saved places appear in the app's menu for quick access.
Save your frequently visited places for quick access later
Offline Maps
If you are worried about using Google Maps in areas with poor cell service, you can download maps in advance. This is called offline maps, and it works without an internet connection.
To download an offline map:
- Tap your profile picture in the top right corner.
- Select Offline maps.
- Tap Select Your Own Map.
- Zoom in to the area you want to download, such as the Greater Toronto Area.
